when I began my sketchbook for the origins brief I did have 'fear of the white page' I was worried that what I was doing might be wrong. I avoided jumping straight in by drawing on loose sheets, later I stuck these in my sketchbook, I felt that they had contextual significance as they were original drawings of my subject matter the town hall. I feel that my sketchbook has a good flow to it I began with drawing and spent allot of time visiting my chosen subject matter and drawing form there,I also took lots of pictures. I however find photographs less valuable than drawing, especially as for my 3D workshop I became fascinated with shape. The physicality of drawing allowed me to explore this and gave me a better understanding of the kind of structures I wanted to create. I explored different ways of collecting shape and texture by taking rubbing's from the surfaces of the town hall. having made a collection of drawing, I could look back and make reference straight away at what it was that originally interested me having picked out my favourite details in the stonework. something I think my sketchbook is defiantly lacking is historical reference, I wish I had thought to do this before as it could have been very useful, I shall aim to do some historic research as it could still be of use.
later on I started to create small design ideas, I took an illustrative approach to create a mythical, Gothic type look. The design ideas were drawn from shapes found in my initial drawing. I then went on to record experiments done on the stand in workshop, at first I was unsure as to weather recording such things in my sketchbook was correct. However for me once things are down on paper as a mixture of notes and visuals they can a little clearer and the thought process can flow. I included photographs and fabric samples as a way of explaining the choices I had made concerning my samples and twarles. I also put the pattern I had used in as this formed the base for my experiments.
I think I could improve my working method by recording things in my sketchbook as soon as they arise, this would make for a more organic documentation of my ideas and thought processes. sometimes I feel that I am to precious, with my sketchbook and that I should just put everything and anything in as long as it has some relevance. To improve my sketchbook I intend to look into the history of the town hall and explain where some of my ideas came form in reference to other artists that have inspired some of my work in this brief. I also intend to research some artefacts relating to the direction I have taken and the experiments that I have done.
