In my blog I have photographed some work from a landscape project. I took a very embroidery based approach to this. I like the subtle effects that can be achieved through stitch and how the landscape can be represented or enhanced. I have also included some work from a college project ‘Create’. The focal point for this project was to ‘work with’ material as opposed to just ‘using’ them. A lot of experimentation was required to discover the potential of different materials and to produce a 3-dimensional final piece. Creating the giant drawing of a paintbrush was fun as this approach to drawing was very different. Due to the size and the implement used, I had to solve different problems, such as scale and how to actually use my implement. My drawing tool was made from bamboo canes and rubbish, such as pieces of cardboard, toys and packaging. The purpose of this was to discover different mark making techniques that best showed the surface I was representing. One of my images above shows strips of plastic that I have gathered on the sewing machine. I specifically chose clear plastic as I found it interesting to see what these objects would look like seen through one another and through folds when stuck down.

I have very much enjoyed my college course and hope to broaden my skills further by studying at MMU. I’m keen to learn weaving and become a competent knitter! When I travelled to a MMU Open Day in the autumn I was very excited about the prospect of studying there as I liked how the course had been adjusted to allow an interdisciplinary approach.
