The interim pitch went well, the response to our themes of interactivity and pop up spaces were good. Ideas upon making spaces within the city greener were also well received. However the name Creative Northern Design Festival was not as popular, I felt that the words creative and design would encourage our theme of a design festival that was for both artists designers and those who don't deem themselves competent in such areas. As I feel anybody can be creative, but not everybody is a designer. The question of what is making, is a reoccurring thought of mine. Never the less it was decided that the name of our festival should be related to our constant theme of umbrellas, as this is a very friendly, fitting perfectly with our want to remain an unintimidating design festival. The 'umbrella' stands for branching out, connecting people, sheltering manchester. The idea to branch the festival into Ancoats was thought strong and I have to agree, if we wish to become a festival that is all inclusive it makes sense to pay attention to an unsung area of Manchester.
"We are in a strange part of town: unknown space stretches ahead of us. In time we know a few landmarks and the routes connecting them. Eventually what was a strange town and unknown space becomes a familiar place. Abstract space becomes concrete place, filled with meaning." Yi Fu Tuan
This is a quote found by Hannah in my group an excellent researcher! this quote fits perfectly with our regeneration idea and how spaces can really become somewhere...
