As I have said before I feel
that to give my project momentum I must keep visually stimulating myself to assure
me of my concept and continually provoke
ideas to inform my making. To help with this I visited the exhibition on coral
at the Manchester museums where I was hugely inspired by the hard but seemingly
soft and spongy, sculptural forms of different kinds of coral. The way the
coral grows makes it look as though it is made from a number of different
pieces built together to make a whole.
The components I was making before
produced through a process of cutting and folding circles relates well to this
as the surface can be built from many separate pieces. I have begun to
experiment with taking these components off, of the ground and making a whole
surface from them. The movement created by doing this is much more fluid much
like a coral reef.
