began growing crystals into
my fabrics to build the surface. This works well with my concept as a natural
structure was being directly used within my sampling. The way the salt crystals
sit upon the fabrics works well as a way of embellishment and has a similar
aesthetic to beading. A technique often used within the fashion context that I
am currently working towards. However this technique would need some attention
paid to the way it could be made more permanent as the crystals would soon fall
off if they were used on a garment.

This is a piece by the
practitioner Amy Congdon a textiles practitioner who aims to bridge the gap
between science and textiles. Congdon grows her own materials that are then
made into jewellery and trims for fashion. Her work touches upon ethical issues
such as the harvesting ivory and fur for the fashion industry and poses the
suggestion that this could be overcome in the future by her research into
growing materials. Here a corelation can be found between her work and mine,
through my experimentation of growing a surface for a decorative purpose.
