In order to keep my project
visually inspired, I visited Crosby beach. I was in search of an encrusted
barnacle covered surface. I felt that it was important for me to keep feeding
my ideas and concept with first hand visual research. This ties in well with my
concept, as can be seen in the photograph the barnacles make a built surface
resonant with the experiment I did with salt and silk. I hope that this
research will go onto inspire more sampling. The colours I found I found in my
photographs taken at the beach were subtle however they may help me to begin
introducing more colours into my work. I am also finding a lot of gradient
within my photographs; this may begin to help with informing some dye work on
fabric. I was also drawn to the rust found on Antony Gormleys sculptures,
as they had a highly textured surface due to them rusting, tying in with my
initial research to do with natural structures and change over time.
Here are some samples that
were inspired by my trip to Crosby beach; the green sample made with separate
hand sewn components is perhaps a little static. Yet I feel that if I were just
continue and build this to make a much bigger piece it would begin to take on a
much more sculptural form. The second sample shown relates to the green one in
the sense that the way the fabric has been manipulated creates little alcoves
in the surface where components can sit in side, this has a similar shape top
the top of a barnacle.
