The work I made for the exhibition in Paris was a
continuation of my other work that I had been making up until this point. I wanted
to continue with the subject matter that I had been looking at already as I was
still hugely interested in this area and wanted to see how this could be applied
to make work for an exhibition type context. I began by looking at the samples I
had been making up until this point; however it was decided that they would be
too flat and static to use for an exhibition. Something more 3 dimensional was
needed to make my work fit within this context. The long turquoise and purple
piece was informed by my cut and fold technique, I decided to continue with the
same process but just make the piece longer, using a gradient of colour as a
way of conveying my theme of spread, growth and change. I wanted the piece to
be sculptural and have form, to achieve this shape I made the work long so that
it could twist and move. I asked for the work to be displayed in a way that
could demonstrate this fluidity, it was decided that the work would be set out
in a twisted form to demonstrate its undulating shape. The second piece I made
for the exhibition was informed by my smaller smocking samples. As I mentioned
before I wanted to display sculptural shapes, this was achieved through smocking
a more firmly structured fabric like the wool I chose. A reoccurring theme thought
my project has been the contrast between hard and soft, I achieved this within
my smocking piece by soaking one end in copper sulphate solution and allowing the
wool to crystallize. I think that this hard light reflective element was needed
to make my pieces seem less dull in texture.
