Karen Nickol

Karen Nicol is an embroidery practitioner who’s work I find very inspiring. In her book ‘Embellished’ she gives an example of an object  or collection of artefacts that then inspired her to make a piece of fabric. This relation between looking at something 3 dimensional or an object that you can collect is something that constantly inspires my work. When Karen came to lecture at the university she explained how her work is very hands on, she does most of her work by hand and allows the making to take as long as is needed, this aspect of Karen’s practice is one that I relate to as I very rarely use CAD and my work is very much about process and creating individual pieces by a means of hand process.  A lot of her work is used in a fashion context, and produced to make a fashion fabric, this is the field I would like to work in and am currently aiming my work towards.
